A month later, Mike sat in a leadership meeting and said almost nothing the entire time. Jake facilitated. Department leaders worked through problems together, without waiting for Mike to weigh in. A young supervisor confidently presented an improvement initiative she'd developed on her own. Another leader volunteered, unprompted, to mentor a new foreman who'd just been promoted.
Nobody looked to Mike for answers. They looked to each other.
After the meeting, Sarah asked, "What did you notice?"
"I wasn't leading the meeting," Mike said.
"No," Sarah said. "You were leading the leaders."
Mike looked around the empty conference room. "I used to measure success by how many people followed me." He smiled. "Now I measure it by how many leaders no longer need to."
Sarah nodded. "And organizations that multiply leaders eventually multiply everything else."
Chapter 38 is where you learn to scale through systems instead of heroics the final discipline standing between where you are now and everything still ahead.
